Wood Boat Plans Reseacrh
Getting the right wood boat plans is essential before you embark on any wooden boat building project. As with anything, proper preperation is the key to achieving the results you desire and this includes sourcing the wood boat plans that are correct for your technical ability level and for the exact specification of boat you intend to build. After successfully building both a simple surf board and a Kayak from wood boat plans, my next project was a rowing boat. This time Had a collection of wood boat plans to choose from, the whole set of 254 wood boat plans only cost $49 I really think this was an excellent purchase considering i had paid $85 for just the Canoe/Kayak single plans previously, for the surf board a friend of mine gave me the plans but I see now he has the same set of 254 wood boat plans that I am now using and this is where the surf board plans came from. Anyway the building of the rowing boat went smoothly, as I already had some knowledge from my first project following the simple wood boat plans this time was a breeze. The rowing boat is constructed again from plywood and has a very simple transom. This only took me five weeks from start to finish as I had alot more spare time to devote to the project. I use this boat for lake fishing still. It is ideally suited to fishing much more than the original idea I had to use the Kayak because the Kayak due to the nature of the design does not have very good balance when nit moving and trying to cast out! The kayak is more suited to fast moving and in the right situation the Kayak is great for speed and can turn on a dime. Now its been some seven or eight years since I used the rowing boat plans to build my small lake fishing boat but she still looks great. I just give her a little maintenance each year and the occasional coat of epoxy. This boat has excellent rowing boat qualities and the design would be equally suited to adding a sail. It is quite light weight too weighing in at approx 39 kilos, which makes her very easy to move both in water and on shore. There are so many designs to choose from in the wood boat plans package I have, almost every type of wood boat is covered and the plans are very detailed and easy to follow. I am passionate about woodworking and about boating and I love to build wooden boats. Over the past 10 years I have built four boats using wooden boat plans, starting with some plans for a small boat ( a kayak actually ) and moving up to bigger boats . The first things I made from some wood plans was just small items of furniture, although I always loved woodworking I was never really confident enough in my abilities to actually build a wooden boat. After I had made a few wooden chairs and a set of drawers I decided to throw my self in the deep ( excuse the pun ) and decided to try my luck using some simple wood boat plans to build a kayak that I thought maybe i could use for fishing on the river. So I embarked on building a 12ft plywood kayak which had an integral buoyancy compartment beneath the seat ( which I also used for storage ). I figured a simple Kayak would be the best project to start with. I purchased some wood boat plans for the canoe which cost $85 and got stuck in. 3 months later the canoe was complete and I have to say it is very satisfying when you hit the water in a wooden boat you have made yourself. I cant describe that feeling the first time I used the canoe and thought ” I built this”. The wooden boat plans I used made it not too difficult and I could have completed it in less than three months but at the time i did have other commitments as well so didn’t spend all my time on the project. I chose a design from the wood boat plans that had a fixed seat rather than a sliding one as the sliding one because of the more simple easier to build design. It turned out it wasn’t really ideal for fishing from but I had great fun on the river with it anyway. So after that I decided that I with the right wood boat plans I could make a slightly larger boat. I ended up giving the canoe to my son in order to make room for my next project which I will tell you about in another post, but for now I can say I found another source for wood boat plans and now I have a huge collection of wood boat plans as well as a wood boat design program for my pc, in fact it was a deal I could not refuse as I now had the building wooden boats bug and couldn’t wait to get hold of my next wooden boat plans and get going on building a new one. After I purchased this huge collection of wood boat plans I even built a new surf board for my son before moving on to my next big boat. I would say to anyone who is thinking about building their own boat from wood boat plans, don’t hesitate, it is so rewarding and there are boat plans you can start with which are very simple even for a beginner.
